I swore to myself that I wouldn’t do some variation of a snake, just too predictable, but… argh, I couldn’t help it. I went all pen & ink, nothing digital, which made for several hair-raising moments. Frankly, I had no plan for when I got to the head of the snake, so I just kind of made it up as I inked. I don’t recommend this method. Oh, another thing I learned (being a novice inker): do the large ink coverage *last*. It warps the paper and makes it harder to do the fine lines. Sigh…
I was actually up at around 3:30am this morning, because I couldn’t sleep. Turns out it’s a decent time to draw, although I feel a little woozy as I’m writing this. My pens all started to run out of ink at pretty much the same time, so I took a little break to work off some steam, and took some photos of where I was in the process. So, yeah, I draw at the kitchen table. Right next to the toaster, with a big mug of coffee handy. My pens of choice are Microns 005, 01, 02 and Brush.

That looks great. We have seen quite a few snakes, but I really really like this one! Great style.
I love the style. And I envy the steadiness of your hand at 3.30am. I can hardly see at that hour, let alone draw (but then again now that I am an Old Person I need a LOT more sleep than I used to.)
Don’t talk to me about old. I was just lucky my 8-year-old daughter didn’t come downstairs to harass her old man. Well, she’s actually a pretty good illustrator herself, so maybe it would have gone faster…
I love great pen and ink, and this is really great pen and ink!
nice linework on the snake.
Thanks all for the feedback!
Love the illo, but especially love the way you photographed its process. The mood of working on it at night. Makes me wish I was a more interesting photographer!
Cool snake, but most importantly I like seeing a bit of your work space. My mom loves to work early in the morning like that, I think the mind is very clear then.
Hey Alfonso,
This piece is fantastic! I love the pattern on the snake, really slick ink work. Reminds me a bit of lps and 50s greaser do’s – all sort of slithery things.
I love your inks! They are nice, crisp, and black!
